Thondekai Onion Palya is a traditional South Indian dish. It can be prepared without onions too. It is a simple yet delicious recipe.

Step 1 :

Wash and cut coccinia into round thin slices.

Step 2 :

Roughly chop onion ensure it is not sliced very fine.

Step 3 :

Heat oil, add mustard seeds, hing and turmeric. After mustard sputters, add black gram and Bengal gram.

Step 4 :

Add chopped onions and coccidia. Stir well and keep it on sim.

Step 5 :

If you want to be tender and cooked well, cover it with a lid, else keep stirring it slightly. It doesn't matter if the onion gets browned a bit.

Step 6 :

After 10 minutes, add salt and sambar powder. Mix it well.

Step 7 :

Stir fry it for a few more minutes, add a tsp of oil, if needed.

Step 8 :

Serve it with rice or roti.
